רָנּוּ שָׁמַֽיִם
יוֹם נִתְּנָה בּוֹ דָּת יוֹמָֽיִם.
Refrain:
Sing forth, O heaven,
on the day when the law of two days was given!
Refrain:
Ronnu shamayim
yom nittena bo dat yomayim

The land quaked,
when God was lofty over Mt. Sinai.
Every man and woman
saw His glory – the people of my mighty ones.
Their soul wore splendor,
their horn became very lofty in Adonai.

Suckling babes
Saw the light.
Then they sang forth,
For they got enjoyment
From the splendor of [divine] rays.
Sing forth, O heaven…
Erets ra‘asha
yom na‘ala el ‘al har sinai

כִּי תַאֲוָה
הִיא לָעֵינָֽיִם.
רָנּוּ שָׁמַֽיִם…
Thousands of angels
tens of thousands [were] in God’s chariot.
The faithful saplings
received the law of the two tablets.
Precious as pearls,
silver, refined seven-fold.

[The Torah] was pre-existent for two thousand [years],
It is beautiful,
Daughter of pride,
For it is appealing
To the eyes.
Sing forth, O heaven…

“I am God” –
This is the beginning of the words of righteousness and truth,
And I am the redeemer
And I have the power to bring life and death.
Oh, do not be defiled [by idolatry],
Lest I cut off, cut down, your offspring.

[Idols] made by hand –
Do not worship them,
Lest you perish.
Have concern for the glory
Of [God, who is] long suffering.

Do not take the name
of God, your god, in vain.
Turn away, lest you be guilty,
for God will not acquit those that make Him a liar,
And he will make their homes desolate –
but His mercy is upon the whole nation of people that seek Him.

And [He is] clean in [the actions of] His hands,
The faithful God;
For every time,
He will prepare goodness,
With a double portion of graciousness.

This piyyut is signed “Elyaqim Ḥazaq.” Alas, we do not know who this Elyaqim was or even whether he was a rabbinic or Karaite Jew. The piyyut has been preserved for us in the Karaite cycle (Vilna printing press, 1852, Vol. IV, p. 135.) and there are several other piyyutim signed with his name. The English translation was prepared by a translator who prefers to remain anonymous. The transcription was made by Stephen Belsky in 2020.
